How to Look After Wellbeing Using Light and Space

Looking after your salon or spa team’s wellbeing is crucial, but did you know that light and space have a direct impact? It’s true! Your team’s wellbeing is impacted by the environment they work in, which is why it’s important to make this as comfortable as possible. To help relieve pressures, we share five reliable ways to use light and space for staff wellbeing.

 

Use natural light to boost wellbeing

Being outside on a sunny day helps us produce vitamin D, which increases melatonin levels and improves our mood (according to WebMD). That’s partly why we love them so much! So, it makes sense to open the workspace to as much natural light as possible. An easy way to do this is by clearing you window area and placing mirrors at strategic points to reflect the light around the room.

 

Maximise wellbeing by tweaking artificial lighting

Sometimes, natural sunlight won’t reach the darker areas of your salon or spa during the darker months. Luminaires with colour temperatures between 4,000 and 6,000 Kelvin, will simulate natural light and make the environment more pleasant for staff in the long term.

SAD lights are also an excellent way to combat the darker areas of your workspace. Designed to stave away Seasonal Affective Disorder, these lights emulate natural light with up to 10,000 lux. This helps the body produce melatonin and improve our wellbeing, without getting in the way.

 

De-clutter your space to increase wellbeing

A big factor of opening up your space is by de-cluttering the environment. This mindful technique is designed around putting your tools away when they’re not in use, and making sure shelves aren’t covered in old products. That way, staff can quickly move about and find what they need without any worry. We have plenty more mindfulness techniques that can help boost wellbeing and revenue too.

 

Hang up pictures that make you feel relaxed

Pictures can help reduce stress by reminding us of family, friends, or a relaxing environment. Research from the National Library of Medicine confirms that serene nature images positively affects our mental health and helps with de-stressing. That means by hanging up nature-related art around the salon or spa can help bring a feeling of relaxation amongst your staff. A similar result can come from more personalised pictures from home in your staff room. Just make sure not to clutter the place too much!

 

Place plants around the salon or spa

Have you tried placing plants around the workspace? Plants not only remind us of nature and relaxation, much like with pictures of them, but they release oxygen to freshen the air. Creating a natural air flow will not only aid your team in feeling calmer and refreshed, but helps to create a more sustainable business. Plants like succulents or Aloe Vera are perfect as they’re low-maintenance and small enough not to clutter your workspace.
